Background

Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. One of the major causes of poverty is lack of access to the basic services. Improving access and mobility of the isolated poor people to markets, services and opportunities is one of the major challenges of Nepal because of the difficult topography where most of the access related projects and program are concentrated and directed towards expensive physical infrastructure such as building roads, bridges.

Nepal is an incredibly mountainous country. The topography of Nepal is very harsh and diverse. Up to 80% of land includes hills and mountains. Countless streams and rivers flowing through such landscape make great obstacles to smooth and proper movement of the people. Harsh terrain of the hilly areas has been one of the major constraints in the delivery of basic services, market, education, health, employment, etc. and in all aspects of developmental work in the country.

Expand

Roads alone are not the best solution for the specific terrain of this country. The cost of constructing roads is very high which is possible with foreign funds and grants. It was noted that only one sixth of total cost will be applied in constructing ropeways rather than roads for same distance. Extensive construction of roads has negative impact on the environment. Degradation of natural integrity of mountains ultimately affects inhabitants of the region. And all these issues eventually lead to poor socioeconomic development of the people.

Due to the design constraints and stability, it is not feasible to construct suspension bridges at each part of the country. Therefore the necessity of the twin in the context of Nepal is very much essential. Also the existing twin system has many technical problems and constraints and has not been found to operate successfully. So the essence of twin with modification and in operation is in demand

Objective

  • To develop transport infrastructure by ensuring participation of communities and stakeholders and enhancing labor based environment friendly local technologies
  • To help the poor rural people improving their access to basic service like education, health, market etc.
  • To improving access of the isolated group living in rural areas and ignored by the government and other bilateral support organizations.
