Group for Rural Infrastructure Development Nepal (GRID Nepal)

It is the well known fact that development of the infrastructure only cannot improve the living condition of people in the area unless they feel the need and are involved in it. So, awareness is one of the basic and effective tools for such rural communities to feel the need; development of infrastructure in such area is essential to nation development. So GRID Nepal believes on the nation development in following steps.

• 80% of the people in Nepal live in rural areas and among them prominent number represent women and alienated groups, so to raise the national development indicator; those village have to be given due respect.
• To raise the living standard of the rural/remote areas, first they should be empowered so that they can feel what is the real development? What are their role and responsibilities? How the state can assist them?
• GRID Nepal gives priority in building rural infrastructures with effective awareness programs simultaneously in such marginalized communities.
• Improving the indigenous technologies in environment friendly concept and bridging/innovating it with modern technology in local area would be effective and real.

GRID Nepal believes that every problem carries solution within itself but everyone can't recognize and identify it due to which problem remains unsolved. Those who can identify, analyze and interpret the problem and its different solutions can move with rapid and effective pace in achieving its goal.

GRID Nepal is involved in searching such key solution within the problem itself. The solution of different things in the first step of development is the willingness of people to participate. GRID Nepal, always seeks to undertake challenge, creativity and community based participation in all ways. The concerned elements of GRID Nepal are committed to make this organization recognized as an appropriate and unique organization in society. GRID Nepal is always approachable to those personnel and institutions that are sincerely committed towards research and development of micro hydro, solar and wind technology, small span appropriate ropeway technology suitable in Nepal.

GRID-NEPAL will have the following objectives remaining under the proposition of the legislation and the prevailing laws of the country.

• Bringing the local manpower to the mainstream of all round development of the country providing the awareness to the local human resources for the appropriate technology management and development of the infrastructures in the rural areas.
• Supporting on the rural infrastructure development with the optimum utilization of the local manpower, making the research, investigation, and identification of the possible means and resources found in the local level.
• Implementation and management of renewable energy resources and benefiting all stakeholders.
• Making research, investigation, supervision and study on the alternative sources of energy such as solar energy, micro hydro-electricity, biogas, and wind energy, small span appropriate ropeway technology, lift irrigation, improved cooking stoves and other resources and supporting on their appropriate management, modernization and expansion.
• Identifying the society with the modern technology improving the traditional local technology.
• Identifying the local level with the development of renewable energy technology, developing intensively in the world and working with the coordination with the government, non-government, private organizations and intellectual personalities in the development of the renewable energy technology.
• Making strong and intensive contribution in the rural consolidation vitalizing the local consumers, providing them with the awareness training for the identification, supervision, establishment and preservation of the rural infrastructures evaluating the environment effect.
• Emphasizing on the establishment of the society of good citizen mobilizing the youths against the social anomalies and evils.
• Supporting on the development of the organic agriculture system reducing the chemical fertilizer changing the traditional farming into scientific agriculture system.
• Developing the concept of the micro-industry among the women and backward community, and developing the habit of being into the group and habit of saving.
• Running the unified and public participatory programs to the target group making the organizations and target group active, which are working in the local level to mobilize the donations and aids received from national and international government and non- government organizations effectively, making the essential coordination with them.
• Establish partnership and collaboration with local community to initiate community development activities and services in the field of education, health, water supply and sanitation, agriculture, community forest, environmental management and eco friendly roads etc.
• Provide support for capacity building of local institutions and communities for the establishment of good governance, institutionalization of planning process and democratic decision making.
• Facilitate to develop and link alternative energy such as micro hydro, bio gas, improved cooking stoves and solar energy to poverty reduction focusing the need of the targeted groups.

• Software Programs: GRID Nepal aims to establish a common power station in a local area which will be model in the South Asian region. In a certain periphery of a remote area, we can develop all the source of the renewable energy, such as, the area is electrified with micro hydro plant from adjoining stream, water supply from the solar water pumping, all the house hold made smoke less environment by installing biogas plants and improved cooking stoves, the tail race water from micro hydro plants used in irrigation of barren land, land is farmed by organic farming and people are encouraged in cash crops. Almost all the resources of the renewable energy are utilized for domestic use and promotion of cottage industries at local area, which will reduce the outflow of productive manpower from that area and the entrepreneurship concept, will be developed. Upon the support from, GRID Nepal is able to implement this model power station soon.
• Hardware Programs: Promotion of renewable energy sources/technology, improvement and innovation of indigenous technologies and bridging it with modern technology. Construction of economic latrines, Gravity/pumping/hybrid water supply systems, community managed irrigation systems, school buildings, trail and green road, improvement of traditional trail and terraces, rain water harvesting, improvement of kitchen garden, installation of micro hydro power plants, biogas plants, improved cooking stove, improved ghattas falls under the hardware programs of GRID Nepal.
• Research and innovative Programs: GRID Nepal aims to establish a common power station in a local area which will be model in the South Asian region. Since the establishment GRID Nepal is conducting various types of technical supports as well as social supports programs in the rural areas of Nepal with its own resources. The programs are based on the health, sanitation, environment protection, social awareness, and renewable energy, innovation of traditional/indigenous technology, alternative/appropriate/cheaper/environment friendly technologies, user group formations and conduction of surveys regarding to these cases, in demand of communities. Followings are some activities conducted by GRID Nepal.

• Solar pumping water supply project is completed in Bhujikot Tanahun, by which more than 300 persons of 67 house holds located at Bhujikot, kami gaun, Thanthok, Bhandarigaun (Dulegauda and Khairenitar VDC), supported by World Bank, under the national competition of Nepal Development Market palace 2005, ‘Launa abata kehi garaun’.
• An awareness cum interaction program on the renewable energy was conducted on May 2006 at Tanahaun District level with the support of Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) Lalitpur
• With the technical assistance of Integrated Technology Development, Nepal (ITD, Nepal) a mechanized bridge is developed. After successful testing up to 1500M span, now it is under construction over Seti river (Between Bharatpokhari Kaski and Dulgauda Tanahun) and span more than 520M.This type of bridge can be applicable for typical location of Nepali contest in the sense of topography, cost, span and technology
• Now there is a high demand from local group and people for this bridge from various place of Nepal and some surveys are also completed by ITD, Nepal
• With the technical assistance of (ITD Nepal), a Local wind pump is developed and successfully tested on Bajrahiguthi saptari, which is very suitable for Terai region for Nepal, Where the farmers are using diesel pump for irrigating their farm. Environmental Conservation Camp Awareness (ECCA) supports for the development of second type of Local wind Pump at Siraha District.
• Now GRID Nepal going to publish a brief Journal (Nepali Version) with the support of Practical Action regarding to rural infrastructure, local technologies and renewable energy which will be worthy for general civilians of remote area to national and national policy makers for remote/rural areas.
